listenListen: Clayton on Seahawks’ tough roster cut choices

John Clayton details what players have secured positions with the Seahawks, what players are on the bubble for the final cut, and what stood out from their final preseason win over the Raiders.
By Brady Henderson
The Seahawks deemed Leon Washington expendable when they traded for wide receiver Percy Harvin, who had doubled as a kickoff returner during his time in Minnesota.
Might Seattle have interest in a reunion with Washington? It's a question worth asking now that Harvin will begin the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list and Washington – according to two reporters' projections – is a candidate to be cut by the Patriots.
Nothing that happened during the preseason would give the Seahawks any reason to be concerned about their in-house options in the return game.
Jermaine Kearse returned his lone kickoff 107 yards for a touchdown, while Jeremy Lane has a 27-yard average on three returns. Walter Thurmond has a 20-yard average on five punt returns, including a long of 46 and one that went for 29 yards Thursday night. Coach Pete Carroll said afterward that Thurmond will share some of the punt-returning duties with Golden Tate.
None of those players, however, have much – if any – experience returning kicks in the regular season. Washington, meanwhile, was coming off a Pro Bowl season – the second of his career – when Seattle released him in March after acquiring Harvin.[/URL]

Doubt it. They are already carrying 5 RB's. Plus Kearse looks like the real deal at returner. Thurmond is also an option

I had a hard time saying goodbye to aging players who were still productive veterans but the youth movement is now. Leon will be remembered well by the 12th man.
