Good morning. Here’s what’s “out there” about the Seahawks for today, July 29:
Danny O’Neil of the Seattle Times has an overview preview of training camp, which opened Thursday with some familiar elements but also a lot of uncertainty. Says O’Neil: “Rosters are a work in progress, changes happening so fast that it makes it difficult to focus on the players on the field for practice without thinking about those headed elsewhere and who’s coming next.”
Eric Williams of the News Tribune focuses on Charlie Whitehurst, who will get his shot to be the starting QB with incumbent starter Matt Hasselbeck on his way to the Titans. Says Whitehurst: “I’ve got some huge shoes to fill. The only way I know to approach this is to come out here and work. I know his legacy here. Nobody is going to forget that, but you try and make your own.”
Christian Caple at PI.com provides a recap of Thursday’s activities, on the field as well as off. Says Caple: “They made another handful of moves, but also took the field for their first official practices (walk-throughs, technically) of training camp. Perhaps of most interest is the deal agreed to by defensive tackle Alan Branch, whom ESPN reports will earn $8 million on a two-year deal (with $4 million guaranteed).”
Thursday was one busy day around the league. Pete Prisco of CBSSports.com has a recap, and also suggests that the madness has just begun. Says Prisco: “We’ve had trades, free-agent moves, releasing of former star players (or supposed stars in Vince Young’s case) and draft picks signing on the dotted line. Oh, by the way, camps opened up.”
Jason Cole at YahooSports.com grades the QB moves around the league, and gives the Seahawks a B for acquiring Tarvaris Jackson. Says Cole: “Anyone who has seen Jackson play knows that there’s a lot of physical skill to him. He’s got a strong arm and he’s a decent runner. He doesn’t read the field particularly well, but he didn’t exactly get much of a chance to learn from his mistakes before he was yanked.”
Here at Seahawks.com, we check in with cornerback Marcus Trufant, who suddenly is the longest-tenured member of the team. We’ve also got recaps of the walk-thru sessions on Thursday morning and Thursday afternoon, as well as a look at the action through the lens of photographer Rod Mar.
