Good morning. Here’s what’s “out there” about the Seahawks for today, Dec 16:
Danny O’Neil at the Seattle Times looks at how Marshawn Lynch’s hard-running ways are helping the Seahawks reshape their image: “There was a time when Sunday’s game would have been a contrast in styles. That time, however, was three or four years ago, back when the Seahawks’ offense was built around its quarterback, and the Bears were defined by their defense. It was the West Coast offense facing the new-age Monsters of the Midway. That’s not to say the Seahawks were never successful. They’ve won four of the past six regular-season meetings with Chicago and had a string of four division titles not that long ago. But there was a reputation that took root in the ashes of that success. ‘Soft,’ fullback Michael Robinson said. Robinson would know. He spent his first four years in the NFL as a 49er, playing the Seahawks twice a year. ‘When I was there, that was our mindset,’ Robinson said, ‘that Seattle, they don’t want to hit for 60 minutes. As I tell the guys here in the locker room, we try to change that mentality.’ “
Eric Williams at the News Tribune looks at K.J. Wright and how is immediate impact allowed the Seahawks to trade former first-round draft choice Aaron Curry: “It has been two months since the Seattle Seahawks traded high-priced linebacker Aaron Curry to Oakland. One of the reasons Seattle felt comfortable making that move was the play of K.J. Wright, the team’s fourth-round selection in this year’s draft. The former Mississippi State player had been solid since taking over at outside linebacker for Curry, but he hadn’t made any “wow” plays. That changed on Monday against the Rams. Wright had a breakout performance, finishing with eight tackles – including three for losses – a sack and two quarterback hurries. Wright also nearly intercepted a Sam Bradford pass in the flat.”
John Boyle at the Everett Herald also looks to Wright: “At 6-foot-4, 246 pounds, K.J. Wright is the Seahawks biggest linebacker, but what has made him so good, so fast has less to do with his imposing size, and more to do with what the rookie has going on between his ears. ‘You get a guy with a brain like K.J. has, and you’ve just got to give him a plan,’ said linebacker David Hawthorne. ‘He’s real good at retaining information, and he really did skip a lot of the rookie mistake processes just being that bright and that dedicated.’ “
Mike Sando at ESPN.com looks at the special contributions of Doug Baldwin: “He has gone from undrafted free agent to the verge of making NFL history. The NFL, in naming Baldwin its special-teams player of the week from the NFC, noted that the receiver can become the first undrafted NFL rookie since 1960 to lead a team in both receptions and receiving yardage. Baldwin’s 45 receptions and 718 yards lead the Seahawks through 13 games. He’s on pace for 883 yards and would need to average 94 per game over the final three weeks to become the first Seattle player since Bobby Engram in 2007 to reach 1,000 yards.”
Here at Seahawks.com, we look at Michael Robinson and his role in the resurgent running game: “The Seahawks have shoved their running game in a higher gear, rushing for 100-plus yards in six consecutive games for the first time since 2002-03 after averaging 77.7 and topping 100 twice in the first seven games. No one has benefitted more from Robinson’s efforts, or is a bigger fan of them, than Marshawn Lynch. The Seahawks’ Skittle-back has a league-high 706 rushing yards in the past six games and already has a career-high 10 touchdowns. He needs 31 yards against the Bears to become the Seahawks’ first 1,000-yard rusher since Shaun Alexander in 2005. ‘I can’t tell you how proud I am of him,’ Lynch said of Robinson, ’and how thankful I am for what he does.’ ”
