Good morning. Here’s what’s “out there” about the Seahawks for today, June 20, as was “out there” over the weekend:
Shelly Smith of ESPN sat down with Pete Carroll to discuss his first season as Seahawks coach in this video report. Spoiler alert: Carroll declines to discuss whether Matt Hasselbeck will be the team’s quarterback this season.
Mike Sando of ESPN.com offers his thoughts on ESPN The Magazine’s Ultimate Rankings of sports franchises in this video report. Sando ties the rankings of NFL teams – especially those in the NFC West – to two key elements: stadiums and quarterbacks.
Ryan Wilson of CBSSports.com blogs that the talk of Matt Leinart being reunited with Carroll won’t go away. Says Wilson: “With the Cardinals, the knock against Leinart wasn’t his ability (although his inconsistent efforts in practice didn’t help); it was that he wasn’t considered a leader.”
As for the give-us-this-day-our-daily-labor-update item, Mike Freeman of CBSSports.com offers that Robert Kraft and John Mara will be key players in unifying the owners — and saving the season. Says Freeman: “Two men are going to save the NFL owners from themselves. Save the owners from the extremists and the selfish among them. The owners who would burn down the season for a few extra pieces of gold bullion despite the fact they swim naked in cash for giggles.”
Clark Judge of CBSSports.com writes that despite the unresolved issues in negotiations for a new CBA, that some coaches around the league are preparing for business to begin in late July with a return to football in August. Says Judge: “That tells us two things: 1) that management believes a settlement is probable, and 2) that it still acknowledges there is substantial work to be completed before players and owners complete an agreement.”
In his expansive – as always – “Monday Morning Quarterback,” on SI.com, Peter King says commissioner Roger Goodell will find out soon just how deep the reported split between owners is as they will huddle on Tuesday. Offers King: “Feels like the calm before the storm a bit, doesn’t it? With the 32 NFL owners meeting Tuesday in Chicago, we should know soon how close a labor deal really is, and whether Roger Goodell and the owners’ negotiating team will have any real problems selling a new labor agreement to the owners.”
