Good morning. Here’s what’s “out there” about the Seahawks for today, Sept. 26:
Mike Sando at ESPN.com has his rapid reactions to the Seahawks’ 13-10 victory over the Cardinals in their home opener. Here’s what he liked: “Both offensive lines generally fared well clearing lanes in the ground game. Seattle was markedly improved in this area. Arizona fared better than expected, save for short-yardage situations, given Beanie Wells’ unavailability stemming from a hamstring injury suffered Friday. Seattle quarterback Tarvaris Jackson did a much better job using his mobility to scramble. He finally found a passing rhythm during a 14-play, 72-yard drive that ended with Jackson diving into defenders and across the goal line. Sidney Rice topped 100 yards in his Seattle debut, and the secondary made timely plays, including interceptions by Marcus Trufant and safety Kam Chancellor. For the Cardinals, quarterback Kevin Kolb found receiver Larry Fitzgerald for a memorable 28-yard scoring reception against double coverage. Kolb was retreating to his left and threw a jump ball off his back foot from the Seattle 27-yard line. Fitzgerald made his leaping grab about five yards deep in the end zone.”
What he didn’t like? What Kolb is giving the Cardinals after everything they gave him – and the Eagles to get him.
Jerry Brewer of the Seattle Times likes what he saw from a physical Seahawks defense. Says Brewer: “After two uneven, skittish and alarmingly poor efforts, the Seahawks responded with tenacity and toughness. It was just enough to edge the Cardinals, who have now lost nine straight road games. In the process, Seattle caught a glimpse of how it must win games this season. The Seahawks have to do it ugly, with a defense that is both stout and opportunistic leading an offense that scrounges up yards and points wherever it can find them.”
Also at the Times, Danny O’Neil focuses on one of those big defensive plays: Chancellor’s late interception. Offers O’Neil: “Chancellor held on, and so did the Seahawks. His interception was as important as any play in a victory that was more necessary than pretty.”
Perry Allen of the Times also makes the obvious Jackson/Kolb comparison. Says Allen: “Take your pick: Tarvaris Jackson or Kevin Kolb? Judging from Sunday’s performance, the Seahawks made the right call this summer, bypassing Kolb when Philadelphia put its backup quarterback on the trading block.”
Dave Boling of the News Tribune focuses on the Seahawks’ drive to their only touchdown. Says Boling: “But in the second half, particularly in one scoring drive, the Seahawks showed offensive potential that might help them survive in the short term and perhaps even succeed in the long run.”
Also at the News Tribune, Eric Williams looks at the Seahawks debut contributions from Rice. Says Williams: “Jackson and the rest of Seattle’s offense received a big boost from the debut of Sidney Rice, who missed the first two games of the regular season with a damaged shoulder. Rice, who signed a five-year, $41 million deal with Seattle during free agency, proved his worth, finishing with eight catches for 109 yards.”
John Boyle at the Everett Herald looks at the scrappy way the Seahawks went about their business. Says Boyle: “And most importantly, Seattle showed plenty of fight after losing its first two games by a combined 40 points, including a shutout loss in Pittsburgh last weekend in which the offense never got past the Steelers 26-yard line. ‘Our back was against the wall,’ said defensive end Chris Clemons. ‘We didn’t want to drop to 0-3.’ ”
Christian Caple of PI.com has Jackson’s reaction – during and after the game – to hearing boos. Said Jackson: “If they keep booing, and we keep winning, I don’t care.”
