Good morning. Here’s what’s “out there” about the Seahawks for today, Dec. 19:
Jerry Brewer at the Seattle Times says it’s time to face the reality – the Seahawks are legit: “The Seahawks are a legitimate, solid football team with a chance to make an incredible comeback this season. They have climbed from a 2-6 record to a 7-7 mark. They have reached .500 for the first time in more than a year. To do so, they beat up on a beat-up team, showing little mercy, winning on the road without a great performance from their best offensive player.”
Also at the Times, Danny O’Neil focuses on the Seahawks’ turnaround in Sunday’s 38-14 dismantling of the Bears: “The first half of Sunday’s game was like the first half of the Seahawks’ season. Yep, it was that bad. It also wasn’t the whole story. Not even close. The second half is what decided Seattle’s 38-14 victory over the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field, just as it’s the second half that is coming to define this season for the Seahawks. Seattle scored 31 consecutive points in the final 30 minutes of Sunday’s game, which sustained the Seahawks’ playoff chances for at least another week.”
Eric Williams at the News Tribune looks at Tarvaris Jackson’s play in the contrasting halves against the Bears: “The catalyst to Jackson’s impressive performance was a five-play, 80-yard drive to open the second half. Jackson completed three out of four passes on that drive, including a 33-yard reception on third-and- 9 from Seattle’s 21-yard line. A play later, Jackson found Ben Obomanu, who was running down the sideline a couple steps ahead of Chicago cornerback Tim Jennings for a 43-yard completion. Marshawn Lynch then bulled his way into the end zone from three yards out. ‘They went right down the field and scored on us,’ Chicago linebacker Brian Urlacher said. ‘It was all downhill from there.’ ”
Also at the News Tribune, John McGrath casts a vote for Pete Carroll as coach of the year: “Pete Carroll won’t be named NFL coach of the year. The award almost certainly will go to the 49ers’ Jim Harbaugh, who has sealed his front-runner status now that the Packers have been denied a perfect record under coach Mike McCarthy. But Carroll’s ability to salvage a Seahawks season that was a lost cause halfway through the schedule represents some of the best work of a stellar coaching career that began in 1974.”
Mike Sando at ESPN.com has a “Wrap-Up” of the victory that pulled the Seahawks to .500, and he’s what he liked: “Strong safety Kam Chancellor forced an early turnover. Also in the first half, free safety Earl Thomas picked off a pass deep in Seahawks territory. Defensive tackle Red Bryant scored on an interception return set up by K.J. Wright’s quarterback pressure. Cornerback Brandon scored on an interception return. Marshawn Lynch scored a touchdown for the 10th consecutive game in which he has played. Lynch ran more effectively than the raw stats indicated. His average suffered from a 2-yard scoring run and some unfortunate early play calling in the red zone. Jon Ryan and the punt coverage team pinned the Bears deep in their own territory to give Seattle an early edge in field position. Jackson got hot early in the second half, finding Golden Tate and Ben Obomanu for long gains, setting up another Lynch TD, this one to tie the game. Jackson completed 19 of 31 passes for 227 yards, one touchdown and a 94.4 NFL passer rating.”
Sando also has a look at the playoff possibilities for the Seahawks, who need to win their remaining two games and also get some help to the reach the postseason for a second consecutive season because the Lions won: “We know this: Four NFC division champions and two wild-card teams will qualify for postseason. Green Bay, San Francisco and New Orleans are headed to the playoffs. Atlanta and Detroit already have nine victories apiece, so if each goes 1-1 or better to finish the season, Arizona and Seattle are out.”
Here at Seahawks.com, we’re got a look at how the second half of Sunday’s game, and the second half of their season, are playing to one of Carroll’s cornerstone credos: “It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish. If Pete Carroll has said that once since he was hired as coach of the Seahawks 23 months ago, he’s said it 23,000 times. And Sunday, the Seahawks put their coach’s repetitive words into repetitive action in a 38-14 victory of the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field. The Seahawks outscored the Bears 31-0 in the second half, which allowed them a win for the fifth time in six games in the second half of the season. ‘The thing that really at hand for hand for us right now is about finishing,’ Carroll said. ‘Since the halfway point, we made a big declaration that we’re to step ahead and start playing better football. And these guys have done that. I’m proud of the way they’re going right now.’ ”

Seattle has a great winning formula right now, with that Marshawn Lynch-led running game (he has scored a touchdown in 10 straight games) and a young and improving defense that seems to get better every week”; and Clark Judge’s “Judgements” at CBSSports.com, which includes this observation on the Seahawks: “Quietly, Pete Carroll is building a foundation for future success in Seattle … with the foundation on defense. The Seahawks have won five of their last six and look what happened in those victories – not much of anything by their opponents. In fact, no one put up more than 17 points, with the Seahawks their opponents 145-65 in those five victories. Oh, yeah, one other thing: Seattle has 30 or more points in each of its last three games … and that’s with Tarvaris Jackson at quarterback.”
