Good morning. Here’s what’s “out there” about the Seahawks for today, Dec. 17:
Eric Williams at the News Tribune looks at Tarvaris Jackson and Darrell Bevell, the Seahawks’ QB and offensive coordinator who are very familiar with the Bears because of their time with the Vikings: “As a member of the Vikings for five seasons, Jackson faced NFC North rival Chicago twice a year, so his knowledge of the Bears’ vaunted Tampa 2 defense and what they like to do should come in handy this weekend. Jackson was 2-0 in two starts against the Bears in 2007. But he didn’t exactly play lights-out, completing 27 of 52 passes (52 percent) for 485 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions for a 66.58 passer rating. ‘Whenever those guys are healthy, they’re a top-10 defense,’ Jackson said. ‘So it helped me a lot being up there and preparing for them twice a year. Even during OTAs (organized team activities) and stuff, we used to always kind of add those guys in – our division opponents – so we’ve always got a little extra time in as far as studying. So the past five years I think it’s helped me tremendously as far as getting ready for this game.’ ”
Danny O’Neil at the Seattle Times also checks in with Jackson, who has been checking the weather report for Sunday’s game against the Bears in Chicago: “ ‘I was checking the weather throughout the whole week,’ Jackson said. ‘It’s supposed to be pretty good.’ The forecast is for sunshine and a game-time temperature in the 40s for the game Sunday in Chicago, a site that both the Seahawks and their quarterback know well. Jackson began his career with the Vikings, who play the division-rival Bears twice a year, and he attempted his first regular-season pass in Chicago.”
John Boyle of the Everett Herald also writes on Jackson, but the topic is his improved health: “Since Jackson suffered the injury more than two months ago in a win over the New York Giants, his health, his availability at practice, and just how much the injury was affecting him, have been constant topics of discussion. This week, however, Jackson just talked about football, and that’s a good sign both for him and for the Seahawks’ offense.”
Mike Sando at ESPN.com has his “Final Word” on the NFC West, including this item on riding the Marshawn Lynch train: “Lynch rushed for 573 yards in 12 games with the Seahawks last season. He has 969 yards in 12 games this season. While Lynch managed only 44 yards on 17 carries against Chicago in his Seahawks debut last season, his hard-nosed running gave Seattle a needed edge in an upset victory. The way Seattle won that game – with tough defense, a big back and an efficient quarterback – showed how coach Pete Carroll envisioned winning games. Can the Seahawks do it again?”
Here at Seahawks.com, we look at an unusual rookie season for a unique fourth-round draft choice: “K.J. Wright was expecting a typical rookie season for a player selected in the fourth round of the NFL Draft. You know, play a little special teams and wait a lot to get on the field as a linebacker. Wright, however, has turned out to be an atypical performer this season. He’s not only starting at strongside linebacker, he’s coming off his most versatile and productive performance as the Seahawks prepare for Sunday’s game against the Bears in Chicago. But then Wright is one of those uniquely talented players that Pete Carroll has been collecting since he was hired as coach 23 months ago. ‘He’s a very unique kid,’ Carroll said this week. ‘He’s learned so much and it’s come so easy to him. We were surprised by that early on, but now it’s just a big positive for us.’ ”

The Seahawks prefer an elite quarterback, but with the team improving despite inconsistent play from Tarvaris Jackson, they aren’t likely to reach to fill a need. Another area of concern is along the defensive line. Coples has lined up at defensive end this season, but played better a year ago inside at defensive tackle. His ability to slip gaps could make him a perfect fit as a three-technique next to run-plugging nose guard Brandon Mebane.”
