Good morning. Here’s what’s “out there” about the Seahawks for today, Aug. 14:
Eric Williams of the News Tribune has the update on Russell Okung from coach Pete Carroll, and it’s better-than-originally-expected news. Says Williams: “Russell Okung could be back in action sooner than anticipated for the Seattle Seahawks. The second-year offensive tackle limped off the field with a left ankle injury after the fifth play of the game against San Diego on Thursday. After being evaluated by trainers, Okung had to be carted to the locker room. But at practice Saturday, Okung watched from the sideline in a jersey and shorts, with no protective boot. Okung simulated pass drops while watching teammates go through individual work. Seattle coach Pete Carroll said he’s hopeful that Okung will heal in time for the team’s regular-season opener at San Francisco on Sept. 11.”
Danny O’Neil at the Seattle Times looks at the remarkable story that is Leroy Hill’s return to the Seahawks, and move back into the starting lineup. Offers O’Neil: “Linebacker Leroy Hill remains after two years in which his headlines outnumbered his highlights. He has been injured, he has been arrested and he has been a free agent twice since 2009 began, so you could say it’s a surprise that he’s back, but that wouldn’t be quite right. He’s never really gone anywhere. ‘I’ve never stepped foot in another team’s facility,’ said Hill, 28. ‘This is all I know. It’s obviously what I wanted, and I’m here.’ He’s here as Seattle’s starting weakside linebacker, the same spot where he started in Super Bowl XL. Cornerback Marcus Trufant is the only other player still with the franchise since that game.”
Also from O’Neil, notes from Saturday’s practice, which was the best and most spirited of camp so far.
The Seahawks host the Vikings in their preseason home opener on Saturday night, and Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com offers observations from Minnesota’s loss to the Matt Hasselbeck-led Titans. Says Seifert: “The Vikings’ offense proved very much to be a work in progress, going scoreless until Ryan Longwell’s 37-yard field goal in the third quarter. Quarterback Donovan McNabb’s two series featured 11 mostly short-range passes and both ended in punts.”
Here at Seahawks.com, we take a look at the impressive debut of rookie free agent Doug Baldwin, which mirrored what he’s been doing on the practice field. As QB Charlie Whitehurst helped explain: “While the offensive players were watching video of practice the other day, Doug Baldwin suddenly appeared from seemingly nowhere to be on the receiving end of a completion. ‘Somebody from the back of the room yelled, ‘That’s not separation; that’s a divorce.’ He was so wide open. That’s because he’s got a lot of suddenness and gets a lot of separation.’ ”
