Good morning. Here’s what’s “out there” about the Seahawks for today, Nov. 6:
Danny O’Neil at the Seattle Times looks at how Tarvaris Jackson has solidified his status as the Seahawks’ starting quarterback entering today’s game against the Dallas Cowboys. Offers O’Neil: “Jackson’s status in Seattle is solidified. The only two 300-yard passing games of his career have come in his past three starts for the Seahawks. No one is chanting the backup’s name. At least not seriously after the Seahawks scored a total of six points in the five quarters Jackson missed after the bye with the pectoral injury. The Seahawks offense needs Jackson. It needs his command of the playbook to operate effectively in that hurry-up pace. The offense needs to keep him upright, though. The fact he’s still standing this season is testament to the fact he’s Kevlar tough. To think he can keep playing amid this kind of punishment isn’t realistic.”
O’Neil also has three keys for each team, including this one for the Seahawks: “Contain DeMarco Murray. The Seahawks are allowing a league-low 3.2 yards per carry this season, but Murray is a rookie who is just two weeks removed from a 253-yard rushing performance against St. Louis. That’s the highest single-game total by any player in the league this season. In fact, it’s the highest by a lot. Chicago’s Matt Forte – who gained 205 yards against Carolina – is the only other player in the league with a 200-yard rushing performance this season.”
Eric Williams of the News Tribune looks at how the Seahawks will be facing a Cowboys defense that has taken on the personality of Rob Ryan, its fiery coordinator. Says Williams: “Seattle coach Pete Carroll said he’ll be prepared for the myriad of defensive fronts, blitzes and coverages the Seahawks expect to see today. ‘His notebook must be enormous because they have so much stuff that they can do, and they attack while they’re doing that, too,’ Carroll said. ‘They’re not going to sit back and wait on you – they’re coming after you. … Basically, it just causes problems and confusion. You can make mistakes – there are some opportunities there too at times, but it is very challenging.’ ”
John Boyle of the Everett Herald looks at how today’s game is a homecoming for a half dozen Seahawks. Says Boyle: “When a Texas born and raised football player goes home for a game in the Lone Star State, there is a legitimate chance that family — and we’re talking immediate family, not distant cousins — will be rooting for the Cowboys, not their own flesh and blood. That’s how big the sport is in a state where football is often described as religion, and that’s why today’s game against Dallas will be special for the six Seahawks who are from Texas. ‘My family still is Cowboys fans,’ said safety Earl Thomas, who is from Orange, Texas, and played at the University of Texas. ‘Some of my immediate family will still be going for the Cowboys. They still want me to do well, but they’ll root for the Cowboys.’ “
Christian Caple at PI.com has five things to watch in today’s game, including: “Do what Philly did. Carroll and Seahawks players said all week that the Eagles’ drubbing of Dallas last week has little – or nothing – to do with the way Seattle prepares for the Cowboys this week. It shouldn’t. But the Eagles did a couple things that could give Seattle hope in this game. For one, Philadelphia sacked Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo four times and forced him into his worst quarterback rating of the season. Romo completed just 18 of 35 passes for 203 yards, a touchdown and an interception.”
Here at Seahawks.com, we look at Priority One for the Seahawks offense in today’s game: First finding and then blocking the Cowboys’ DeMarcus Ware. Says fullback Michael Robinson: “He just knows. I’ve seen him know that a back is going to chip him and he plays into the back and knocks the back off him. He’s just a very smart football player; very instinctual. We’ve definitely got to be on our best to deal with him. And it’s not just the tackles, because he’ll be all over the field.”

Bryan Broaddus at ESPN.com takes a look at the matchups in today’s game from the Cowboys’ perspective, including this one: “Last week against Philadelphia, the Cowboys front seven was embarrassed by the Eagles’ blockers. The Eagles’ offensive line physically took it to the Cowboys, both run and pass. Marcus Spears, Jason Hatcher, Kenyon Coleman and Sean Lissemore and were awful. It was surprising how bad this group of defensive ends struggled in the game. The Eagles dominated these ends at the point of attack. Spears, Hatcher, Coleman and Lissemore couldn’t get off blocks. They struggled to get push when Michael Vick went back to pass. The Seahawks are starting three offensive linemen that have two or less years of experience as starters. On the right side, the Seahawks are starting two rookies in guard John Moffitt and tackle James Carpenter. That is the side of the line where the Seahawks have struggled the most. Marshawn Lynch is a talented back and you can see the frustration when he gets stopped for no gain. The Cowboys’ line and linebackers need to dominate this game much like they were dominated last week. Anything thing else would be disappointing.”
