Good morning. Here’s what’s “out there” about the Seahawks for today, Nov. 27:
Danny O’Neil at the Seattle Times looks at something new that comes with the Seahawks’ game against the Redskins today: “Expectations. Three straight losing seasons have a way of sapping those out of a city. But when Seattle plays the Washington Redskins Sunday at CenturyLink Field, everyone will be able to see how the Seahawks handle this bit of success they’ve managed to find. Seattle is coming off its first back-to-back victories of the season, while Washington is in the midst of a six-game losing streak, its longest skid in 13 years. All of a sudden, this is a game Seattle is expected to win — which is a sign of progress in and of itself.”
O’Neil also has his keys to the game, including: “Protect the passer. That won’t be easy. Washington has 31 sacks this season, tied for the most in the league. Ryan Kerrigan is tied for third among all rookies with five sacks while Brian Orakpo, in his second year in the NFL, has 5.5. Expect Washington defensive coordinator Jim Haslett to bring pressure against the Seahawks, who are still adjusting to the loss of tackle James Carpenter and guard John Moffitt on the right side of the line.”
Eric Williams at the News Tribune plays off that by looking at what the Seahawks’ line can do to defuse those two: “Seattle needs to keep running the ball effectively. Seattle has averaged 37 rushes the last three weeks, gaining 136 yards a contest. A steady diet of running back Marshawn Lynch could help slow down the Redskins’ pass rush. A quick passing game could also help. Quarterback Tarvaris Jackson needs to get the ball out of his hands before the pass rush gets to him. So you might see a return of the no-huddle offense Seattle used effectively earlier this season.”
John Boyle at the Everett Herald looks at the other side, the Seahawks’ defense: “The Seahawks currently rank in the top half of the league in nearly every important defensive category, including total defense (11th), scoring defense (14th), rush defense (8th) and pass defense (15th).”
Christian Caple at PI.com has “Five Things to Watch,” including Seahawks cornerback Brandon Browner: “Browner had perhaps his best game in coverage on Sunday against the Rams, as he was credited with two passes defensed and had two tackles. He figures to be busy again this week, as the Redskins may take to the air even more than usual in an attempt to avoid Seattle’s vaunted rush defense. Browner’s progression is an intriguing one for the Seahawks, who took a chance on the former CFL player by signing him prior to training camp. He surprised everyone by locking down one of the starting corner spots, but struggled early in the season when his physical style led to several pass interference and illegal contact penalties. ‘He’s a good enough athlete to do the artful part of it, the body positioning things to get around guys and make sure he doesn’t get contact, and he’s working really hard to get that done,’ Carroll said. ‘It’s still going to happen sometimes because he’s just that physical, but he’s working hard and he really demonstrated that last week on a number of plays.’ ”
Here at Seahawks.com, we look at what this game should come down to – the strength of each team, defense: “Both offenses have been more ebb than flow to start games this season. While the Seahawks have scored 30 first-quarter points, the Redskins have only 16 in the opening quarter. Only the Cleveland Browns (nine) and winless Indianapolis Colts (13) have scored fewer first-quarter points than the Redskins. Only four more teams besides that trio have scored fewer than the Seahawks. The Seahawks have scored on their opening drive once, and that was a touchdown in the Week 5 upset of the New York Giants. The Redskins’ lone first-drive score came in Week 3 against the Cowboys, on a field goal. The Seahawks’ other first possessions have resulted in eight punts and an interception. The Redskins? Five punts, two interceptions and two fumbles. So the team that can jump to an early lead on Sunday will be able to play to its strength – defense”.
