Good morning. Here’s what’s “out there” about the Seahawks for today, Oct. 18:
The big story on Monday, of course, was cornerback Marcus Trufant being placed on injured reserve because of a back problem. Danny O’Neil at the Seattle Times had this to say about the situation: “The bigger question is Trufant’s long-term prospects with the team. Trufant, 30, is a captain on defense and the longest-tenured member of the Seahawks, who chose him in the first round of the draft in 2003. … Does Seattle expect Trufant will be ready to come back for training camp in 2012? ‘I would think so,’ (coach Pete) Carroll said. ‘I would think he would. We haven’t even talked about that yet. We’re just trying to get through the shock of what this is.’ “
Eric Williams at the New Tribune has the news about Trufant as part of a rundown on what was a busy Monday for the Seahawks.
John Boyle at the Everett Herald also focuses on Trufant, offering: “Carroll said the hope is that Trufant will not need surgery — he didn’t in 2009 either — but that the Seahawks are being cautious with this reoccurrence of a serious back injury. ‘This is for lifelong care,’ Carroll said. ‘We’ve got to take care of this guy or this could be a problem that could bother him forever. We want to make sure we do it right, so we have to take all the precautions. He’s aware of that. He’s disheartened and all, but he knows it’s the right thing to do.’ “
Also at the Herald, Scott Johnson continues his “The Game of my Life” series with a look at Sherman Smith, the Seahawks’ original running back who now coaches the position. Says Johnson: “Once Sherman Smith allowed himself to imagine a life with greater opportunities, his drive to succeed took him to higher places. He would realize his dream of playing in the NFL, and shortly thereafter he would reach a milestone that even dreams couldn’t have envisioned.”
Mike Sando at ESPN.com looks at the NFC West cornerback landscape without Trufant. Says Sando: “The Seahawks will have gone from Trufant and Kelly Jennings as their starters last season to Walter Thurmond and Brandon Browner for the remaining 11 games. The Cardinals have gone from Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (traded) and Greg Toler (injured reserve) to Patrick Peterson and A.J. Jefferson. The Rams have changed from Ron Bartell and Bradley Fletcher (both on IR) to Justin King and Al Harris. The 49ers have gone from Nate Clements (released) and Shawntae Spencer (backup) to Carlson Rogers and Tarell Brown, with rookie Chris Culliver surpassing Spencer in the nickel defense.
Christian Caple at PI.com looks at the possibility of Tarvaris Jackson being able to play this week. Says Caple: “Coach Pete Carroll said Monday that Jackson is ‘way ahead’ of schedule after straining his pectoral against the Giants in Week 5, and that it’s still possible he could return to practice this week and play on Sunday. Possible might not mean probable in this case, but Carroll — surprise, surprise — sounded optimistic. ‘He’s able to throw the ball. He’s thrown the ball a little bit,’ Carroll said. ‘We’re just taking it one day at a time and see how he tolerates. He’s running out here a little bit. He’s way ahead of any schedule that anybody would have thought of at this point and we’ll just see where that takes us.’ ”
Here at Seahawks.com, we’ve also got a look at the loss of Trufant through the eyes of Thurmond: “But his absence speaks volumes, not just for the defense but the entire team. Trufant was voted the defensive captain by his teammates this season and was by far the most experienced of the team’s defensive backs, having started 123 games since the Seahawks made him the 11th pick overall in the 2003 NFL Draft. ‘It’s very unfortunate, because he was a big part of the team,’ said Thurmond. ‘A lot of the DBs, especially all the young guys, really looked up to him. So hopefully he’s still around so he can keep giving us knowledge.’ ”
