Good morning. Here’s what’s “out there” about the Seahawks for today, Oct. 12:
Tom Cable, the Seahawks’ assistant head coach/offensive line coach, talked to reporters on Tuesday for the first time since having back surgery two weeks ago. Dave Boling of the News Tribune writes that Cable is getting better, along with his young line. Said Cable: “It’s an old injury that all of a sudden got really bad. So the choice is either you lose the use of your left leg or you go get this done and now you can move forward. I feel great – it obviously worked. The incision is a big one, so that’s the only real negative left … just letting that heal up.”
Danny O’Neil at the Seattle Times also writes on Cable, and the line, offering: “Hard to tell whose recovery has been more impressive the past two weeks — Cable didn’t miss a game after surgery and the offense he’s in charge of has become suddenly productive.”
John Boyle at the Everett Herald also weighs in on Cable and the line, writing: “Not only is Cable’s back getting better with time, so too is the young line he is in charge of developing. When Cable went in for back surgery two weeks ago, the Seahawks were coming off a victory, but it was a win that featured just 13 points from an offense that had scored just 30 in its first three games. In their past two games, however, the Seahawks scored 28 points in a loss to Atlanta, and 36 points in last weekend’s win in New York (although the defense accounted for nine of those points).”
Mike Sando at ESPN.com breaks down five game-changing plays from the NFC West each week, and this week all five came from the Seahawks’ upset of the Giants. Says Sando: “The Seattle Seahawks’ flair for the dramatic went unmatched around the NFL in Week 5. Cornerback Brandon Browner’s clinching 94-yard interception return for a touchdown against the Giants stands atop the list of pivotal plays. The Seahawks’ chances for winning went from less than 50 percent to near certainty, as measured by ESPN’s win probability calculations reflecting results from thousands of game situations.”
Sando also has his weekly “Stock Watch” in the division and among the “risers” is Doug Baldwin, the Seahawks’ rookie wide receiver. Says Sando: “The undrafted rookie free agent from Stanford caught eight passes for 136 yards and the winning touchdown against the Giants. He has repeatedly stood up to hard hits, including one that drew a $15,000 fine from the NFL last week. Baldwin is giving the Seahawks a reliable slot receiver with speed and a hard-nosed mentality.”
