Rookie quarterback Russell Wilson will start Friday night's preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
In effect, Wilson moves up the depth chart with Matt Flynn as the backup, and Tarvaris Jackson is either on the way out of Seattle or is insurance.
Carroll's explanation on the decision to promote Wilson was a familiar one.
"This is about competition," Carroll told the media Tuesday, as reported by the Seattle Times.
"That's what we've always been about, and if somebody doesn't see it that way, then they just don't understand us, and I can't do anything about that. It's a great competitive opportunity to watch."
You can bet Carroll loves the youthful energy and vigor of Wilson, who tweeted Tuesday at
Wilson of course still needs to play well in preseason game No. 3 and No. 4, but presumably the job is his. That leaves Flynn as the backup, and is a someone who the Seahawks spent a sizable amount of money on, but has yet to lead the Seahawks on a touchdown drive-in two preseason halves. Wilson has played 11 series, resulting in five touchdowns.
