The best receiver in franchise history? Easy, it was Steve Largent.
All he did during his 14-year career with the Seahawks was lead the team in receiving for 12 consecutive seasons (1976-87). When he retired after the 1989 season, Largent was the NFL’s all-time leader in receptions (819), receiving yards (13,089) and TD catches (100).
But who is second-best behind the Hall of Famer, and even third? There were choices to be made when the readers of Seahawks.com voted for the 35th Anniversary team.
Finishing second to Largent (5,004 votes) was Brian Blades (3,487), and coming in third – as the slot receiver – was Bobby Engram (2,254). Darrell Jackson finished fourth (1,388), followed by Joey Galloway (941), Daryl Turner (211) and Koren Robinson (95).
Jackson had more career receptions (441 to 399) and receiving yards (6,445 to 4,859) than Engram. Jackson (47), Galloway (37) and Turner (36) had more TD catches than Engram (18).
But you can’t measure everything purely in statistics.
“To be mentioned on the 35th Anniversary team in the same breath with Steve Largent and Brian Blades, I’m humbled,” said Engram, who holds the club single-season reception mark (94 in 2007). “It’s an honor to be on that team with some phenomenal football players.”
Engram considers Blades “one of the most underrated receivers in NFL history.”
The readers consider Engram one of the best players in Seahawks history. You can read his story here, the 13th in a series of articles profiling the players selected to the 35th Anniversary team.
