Here are five things to love about the NFL from Week 12:
One. Terrell Suggs. We have to go back to Thursday for this one, but his love-evoking performance against the 49ers on Thanksgiving evening makes it No. 1. Suggs had three of the Ravens’ nine sacks on Alex Smith, forced a fumble and also had two other tackles for losses. But his best play – or at least one of those how-did-he-do-that? plays – came when Suggs suspended in mid, floating jump to disrupt Smith’s short pass into the left flat.
Two. Patrick Peterson. We’ve been down this lovers’ lane before, but the Cardinals’ rookie tied an NFL record with his fourth punt return for a touchdown this season. Or 11 games, to be exact. This one was an 80-yarder that showcased his vision, instincts and speed in a 23-20 victory over the Rams in St. Louis. Devin Hester, Jack Christiansen, the Seahawks’ defensive back coach from 1978-82; and Rick Upchurch are the other with three to have done it. But Peterson is the first with four of at least 80 yards in a season.
Three and four. Rampaging runners. The Cardinals’ Beanie Wells went for a club-record 228 yards and an 8.4-yard average against the Rams, while the Titans’ Chris Johnson ran for 190 yards and an 8.3-yard average against the Buccaneers. It was the fifth time in league history that two backs ran for at least 190 yards and averaged at least 8 yards per carry on the same day. The others, you ask? Tom Wilson and Rick Casares on Dec. 16, 1956; Bobby Mitchell and Johnny Olszewski on Nov. 15, 1959; Adrian Peterson and LaDainian Tomlinson on Oct. 14, 2007; and Frank Gore and Johnson on Sept. 20, 2009.
Five. Red Bryant. Blocking a field goal and a PAT should have been enough for the Seahawks to win their third game in a row and set the stage for a run to a winning mark overall at the end of the current three-game home stand. It didn’t happen, of course, but that doesn’t discount what Bryant was able to do. Again. With his two-blocked field goal effort against the Browns in Week 7, Bryant has the club record for most blocked kicks in a season.
