A recap of the Seahawks’ 23-17 loss to the Washington Redskins at CenturyLink Field on Sunday:
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Rex Grossman. In his ninth season, and with his third NFL team, the Redskins’ quarterback came up with a career effort by completing 26 of 35 passes for 314 yards and two touchdowns.
And he saved his best for last, completing 7 of 9 passes for 109 yards in rallying the Redskins to 16 fourth-quarter points and two touchdowns against a Seahawks defense that had allowed a league-low 60 points and five TDs in the fourth quarters of their first 10 games.
“I liked the way he played today,” Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said of Grossman. “He made some great throws, had some great reads.”
None was better than his 50-yard TD pass to Anthony Armstrong on a third-and-19 play that gave the Redskins the lead for good 20-17.
“Rex was able to look off the safety and (Armstrong) made a heckuva catch to make the play,” Shanahan said.
PLAYS OF THE GAME
Offense: The Grossman-to-Armstrong TD pass was impressive – not to mention frustrating. But we’re going with Marshawn Lynch’s 20-yard TD off a short pass in the second quarter. He has now scored in his past seven games, which ties for the third-longest streak in franchise history with Chris Warren (1993-94) and leaves him chasing Shaun Alexander (nine in 2005) and David Sims (eight in 1978).
Defensive: Brandon Browner’s interception and 16-yard return to the Redskins’ 20-yard line in the second quarter. It was a physical play by the Seahawks’ cornerback, as he battled Jabar Gaffney to make the pick. It also was momentum-changing play, as it set up Lynch’s TD that tied the score at 7-7.
“It was probably 2 yards out in front of Jabar,” Grossman said. “I don’t know how he got to it, but he made a great play.”
Special teams: Red Bryant batted his way into the Seahawks’ record book by blocking a field-goal attempt in the second quarter and a PAT in the fourth quarter. Coupled with his two field goal blocks in Week 7 against the Browns, Bryant set the club single-season record with four blocked kicks and tied the mark for blocked field goals that was set by Joe Nash in 1989 and tied by Craig Terrill in 2010.
But we’ll go with the blocked field goal, because it was a three-point play.
“We had a good plan going into it,” Bryant said. “We knew they had struggled on field goals so watching the tape the special teams coach (Brian Schneider) thought we would have a good opportunity to go in there and fake that play.”
INJURY REPORT
Middle linebacker David Hawthorne (knee) and wide receivers Sidney Rice (head) and Mike Williams (shoulder) left the game and did not return; while wide receiver Doug Baldwin (shoulder) and linebacker Leroy Hill (foot) were injured but returned.
“We’ll have to see tomorrow,” coach Pete Carroll said of the severity of the injuries and how long the players might be sidelined.
WORTH NOTING
Lynch has run for 100-plus yards in three of his past four games, giving him 706 for the season and putting him on a pace to finish with for 1,026 – which would make him the Seahawks’ first 1,000-yard rusher since Alexander in 2005.
With five catches, Baldwin now leads the team with 37 for the season.
Hill led the Seahawks with eight tackles, one more than cornerback Richard Sherman and Hawthorne.
The Seahawks had only one sack of Grossman, by Anthony Hargrove, but they hit him nine times – including two each by defensive tackles Brandon Mebane and Clinton McDonald, who started for an injured Alan Branch.
Jon Ryan averaged 44.5 yards on six punts, with a net average of 43.3 yards, four inside the 20 and a long of 67 yards.
The Redskins had substantial edges in total yards (416-250), passing yards (314-144) and time of possession (33:20-26:40).
There were 19 penalties for 206 yards in the game – and that only counts those that were accepted. The Seahawks were flagged nine times for 91 wrong-way yards.
