You didn't know that? There are a few NFL that are like that...There was an L.A. Bucaneers also...The worst is the naming teams after baseball teams; New York Football Giants, Brooklyn Football Dodgers, New York Football Yankees, etc..

Those Seahawks still exist btw...They moved to Baltimore then were stolen in the middle of the night to Indy....Sad that PAYton Mannin' is a player on the former Seahawks...But our name can also claim Johnny Unitas so that's not toooo bad...

I just knew they were named from a public naming contest. I didn't know someone ripped off the name. Weak.

Most franchises in sports have some sort of ripoff deal going..

Bears: Cubs
Lions: Tigers (oh my)
Redskins: Braves (took the name while both were in Boston)
Giants: Giants
Titans: Jets (formerly the Titans)
Texans: Chiefs (KC used to be the Dallas Texans)
Oilers (NHL): Oilers (NFL)
Blunder: Orlando Thunder
etc. etc. etc.

The list goes on and on....But yeah....Pretty weak..

Given the Miami team was back in the 40s and our Hawks are from the 70s, I don't think the name was ripped off. It's a logical name for a coastal team and not a rare type of bird. Duplicate names are independently generated all the time--look at bands, movies, cartoon & comic characters too. (Wrote the guy who draws a character named Buzz who had no clue about the college mascot or the cereal character!)
:-D

There are hundreds of songs titled "I Love You." There was a SCARFACE film in the 30s and THE FUGITIVE in the 40s which had nothing to do with the later ones--happens all the time.

Cool info, tho; thanks for posting the article link!

True but....Some teams like the "Titans" stole a name from a team that was around in the '60s....I can understand the Seahawks thing because they were really an unknownar team but...The Titans of New Yawk were well known and alot of people who had season tickets for them are still Jets season ticket holders.

Some of those old NFL names are funny--Staleys (Bears), Normals (Cruds) makes you wonder what their logos would be...Would a "Normal" be a pic of a plain looking dude?

That logo is ugly! Glad they redesigned everything when they came to Seattle or after the guy from Microsoft bought the team and built the stadium. (forget the timeline)

The Seahawks are an expansion franchise. They have no relationship with the Miami Seahawks besides their name. The Miami Seahawks did become another team though, the Baltimore Colts.

Yes, we all know that; the debate was whether or not the name was influenced by/stolen from the old Miami team. I agree with 94 that because it's so obscure (only one season) as well as old, it's probably a coincidence unlike the Titans which he mentioned.

Love 94's idea for the logo for The Normals, tho! Either that or the Jim Valentino character normalman from the comics. :)

HAHA!

So we got "Normals"...But what's a "Staley"? Well, I know why they were called that (company name) but what would the logo look like? LOL

FYI: The Packers were named after "Acme Packing Company"----you'd think they'd at least incorporate the Coyote into their logo! LOL

I know, I was just saying that because robdog was saying he was glad they redesigned the logo before moving to Seattle.

A Staley logo? Hmmm...Maybe a pic of an old Asian guy ("Stale Lee")? I know, completely inappropriate. My apologies.

Thanks for the bg on the "Packer" thing. I may have heard that decades ago but completely forgot and was curious again!

Along those lines, I just saw a Tiki Barber interview video on Yahoo explaining that the "G" on the Green Bay helmets actually stands for "Greatness." Always thought it was for "Green bay".

Those who already knew this will think me dumb, but none of the GB players interviewed knew it either, so I'm in good (but ignorant) company.

However, I'm sure the designer (a guy named George, coincidentally another "G") probably planned it as a double--or triple--meaning! Designers do that kind of thing on purpose.

LOL I was just going to type that "Greatness" story after reading your first sentence..Of course it was a moot point when I read your second sentence...LOL

We should totally put that logo back on our helmets. Marketing departments be damned, that is good stuff right there.
