2010 was a year in which the Seattle Seahawks went through coaching changes, front office changes and many player changers- 275 to be exact. Here’s a refreshing of a few of the changes, news and everything in between of the past year.
January 8, 2010- First-year Seahawks Head Coach Jim Mora is let go after one-season as Seahawks coach in which he posted a 5-11 record and lost his final four-games of the season. Mora was named the Seahawks coach after Mike Holmgren retired after nine-seasons running the Seahawks. The same day reports started that current USC coach Pete Carroll would succeed Mora as head coach.
Sure enough Carroll was named the Seahawks head coach and that quickly kicked-off the changes that would follow Seattle through the 2010 NFL Year.
January 19, 2010- Over a month after GM Tim Ruskell resigned unexpectedly the Seahawks named 38-year-old John Schneider GM. Schneider came over from Green Bay and would bring with him the ability to draft players and be Pete Carroll’s back-up in decision making.
February 7, 2010- Seahawks all-time great and one of NFL’s best all-time offensive tweets on his Twitter account that after two-seasons of injury plagued seasons he will be retiring during the off-season. At first the tweet wasn’t taken serious but over two-months later Jones would officially make the announcement to a career that earned him nine Pro Bowls (Seahawk record), four All-Pro honors and a member of the 2000s All-Decade NFL Team. Jones officially retired from the NFL on April 29, 2010 via Twitter. The Seahawks announced they would retire his No. 71 jersey and the Governor of Washington Christine Gregoire proclaimed April 30th Walter Jones Day.
March 18, 2010- Seahawks send their 40th pick in the second-round of the 2010 draft and a third-round pick in the 2011 draft to San Diego for quarterback Charlie Whitehurst and the 60th pick in the 2010 Draft. Whitehurst is projected to be Matt Hasselbeck’s replacement as he’s in the final year of his contract with the Seahawks. The Seahawks also sign Whitehurst to a two-year contract despite him only playing in two games in his four-year NFL career with the Chargers.
April 16, 2010- Seahawks sign former first-round Wide Receivers Mike Williams and Reggie Williams. Reggie lasted about two-months and Mike made the Seahawks Opening Day Roster. As the 2010 Season went on Mike became the go-to-guy for Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck.
April 22-24, 2010- The Seahawks made no big name signings in Free Agency under Carroll and Schneider so with the draft entering and the possibility of no Jones the Seahawks had two first-round picks. With their first pick the sixth overall the Seahawks went with Jones replacement OT Russell Okung out of Oklahoma State and with the 14th-overall pick (previously the Denver Broncos) the Seahawks took Safety Earl Thomas from Texas University. The next two-days the Seahawks made several other depth picks and at the end of Schneider’s and Carroll’s first draft together earned the honors of having what most NFL Draft analysts called the best draft by a team in the 2010 Draft.
The Seahawks also made several trades landing RBs Lendale White (he would be released before the season started) and Leon Washington.
