RENTON, Wash. -- The Seattle Seahawks have placed Pro Bowl offensive tackle Russell Okung on injured reserve-designated to return with hopes of getting him back on the field after eight weeks.
Okung suffered a torn ligament in his left big toe in the first half of the game with the San Francisco 49ers last weekend.
"It's a six-to-eight week injury, so we hope it will all work out right for us," Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said Friday. "Russell is determined and kind of excited that he has a chance to get back this season, as we are. So we'll just ride it out and take good care of him."
The IR-designated to return list allows a team to place a player on IR after the season has started, but bring him back after eight weeks. Okung can start practicing after six weeks.
If all goes as planned, he can return to the field for the home game against the Minnesota Vikings on Nov. 17. A team can only designate one player a season as designated to return from IR.
Veteran offensive linemen Paul McQuistan is moving from left guard to Okung's left tackle spot in his absence. James Carpenter will start at left guard.
"We're very fortunate that Paul has so much experience and can jump right in there," Carroll said. "The first thing you worry about is communication and the continuity up front, and Paul will do a great job with that. Now that he's had a week under his belt [at practice] out there, it will help him a lot."
As ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen first reported Friday, Okung received a second opinion on his injury earlier this week in Charlotte from Dr. Robert Anderson, a noted foot specialist.
