Matchup microscope
Seahawks offense vs. Redskins OLBs Ryan Kerrigan and Brian Orakpo: This is a 10-man project for the Seahawks, because if they don’t find a way to control Kerrigan and Orakpo they will find their way to QB Tarvaris Jackson. The Redskins are tied for the league lead in sacks, and that productive pass rush is fueled by the pressure off the edges from Kerrigan, who has six sacks, 21 QB hits and four forced fumbles; and Orakpo, who has 5½ sacks, 18 QB hits and two forced fumbles. Jackson is starting feel better while playing with the strained pectoral in his right shoulder, now he needs to start playing better after throwing six interceptions in the past four games. Keeping Kerrigan and Okrapo off him is a good place to start in getting that done.
One to watch
Rex Grossman vs. the Seahawks secondary: If the Seahawks can shut down the Redskins’ running game, as expected, it will be up to Grossman to make plays – positive plays. He has thrown 12 interceptions and lost the starting job to John Beck after a four-interception performance against the Eagles in Week 6. His favorite targets are TE Fred Davis (49 catches for 636 yards and two touchdowns) and WR Jabar Gaffney (41 for 593 and three). If CBs Brandon Browner and Richard Sherman and SS Kam Chancellor can be as physical with them as they’ve been with receivers the past two games, the Seahawks should have a good chance to increase Grossman’s interception total.
Fun to watch
Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch vs. Redskins MLB London Fletcher: Stopping the Seahawks’ “Beast Mode” back isn’t all on Fletcher, but he is the pivotal player in the process. Fletcher leads the Redskins with 123 tackles and has a way to controlling the middle of the field. Lynch has two 100-yard rushing performances and 332 yards in his past three games, and also has scored a touchdown in the past six games in which he has played. The Seahawks need Lynch to continue his productive ways if they’re going to run their winning streak to three in a row. Fletcher stands in the way.
One tough task
Redskins OTs Trent Williams and Jammal Brown vs. Seahawks DEs Chris Clemons and Red Bryant: Williams (knee) and Brown (groin) were limited in practice this week because of injuries. Clemons and Bryant have been putting a hurt on blockers. Clemons leads the team with eight tackles and three forced fumbles; including his three-sack, two-forced fumble performance against the Rams last week that earned him NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors. Bryant has been dominant and disruptive, often at the same time. Facing these two in the din generated by the 12th MAN will make for one long afternoon for Williams and Brown.
Worth noting
The Seahawks’ defense has allowed 60 second-half points, which tied for the league lead after 11 weeks. … The defense also is allowing an average of 3.5 yards per carry, which ranks third in the league. … Seahawks P Jon Ryan’s average (48.7) ranks fifth in the league and he averaged 49.7 yards, with a net of 44.9, in last week’s victory against the Rams in St. Louis. … The Redskins’ Roy Helu leads all NFL rookie running backs with 31 receptions and is the only rookie with at least 200 rushing yards (248) and 200 receiving yards (213). … MLB David Hawthorne and FS Earl Thomas lead the Seahawks in tackles (65). … The Redskins have scored 16 first-quarter points, third-lowest in the NFL; while the Seahawks have 30, the eighth-lowest total. … The Redskins lead the regular-season series 10-4, including five-game winning streak. But the Seahawks beat then in the playoffs in 2005 and 2007 in games played in Seattle.
