Star power: Ryan Kerrigan and Brian Orakpo. If you want to settle on just one of these outside linebackers you’ll to flip a coin, because their statistic certainly do very little to separate them – and their importance to the Redskins’ defense. Kerrigan, the team’s first-round draft choice this year, has 49 tackles and six sacks. Orakpo, the first-round pick in 2009, has 43 tackles and 5½ sacks. Forced fumbles? Four for Kerrigan, two for Orakpo. QB hits? Kerrigan 21, Orkapo 18. Needless to say, these two have had a huge – and almost equal – impact on any success the Redskins have had this season.
Unsung hero: Fred Davis. The Redskins’ tight end is no stranger to Pete Carroll. Davis played for the Seahawks’ coach at USC. After a slow start to his career, the Redskins’ second-round draft choice in 2008 leads the team in receptions (49) and receiving yards (636) – a pace that will produce a 78-catch, 1,017-yard season. He’s also had 80-plus receiving yards in five of the first 10 games, and produced 32 first downs.
On the spot: Trent Williams and Jammal Brown. Williams, the Redskins’ first-round pick last year, has never played at CenturyLink Field. Brown, a first-round pick in 2005, has played in Seattle once – but that was in 2007, while with the Saints. So the Redskins’ tackles will not only have to deal with the noise generated by the 12th MAN, but the explosive trio of Chris Clemons, Red Bryant and Raheem Brock. Clemons is coming off a career-high three-sack game against the Rams and leads the team with eight. Bryant (330 pounds) outweighs both Williams (318) and Brown (313), and probably is quicker. Only Clemons (15) has more QB hits than Brock (six), who plays opposite Clemons on passing downs.
Burning question: Will the Seahawks be able to churn out a fourth consecutive 100-yard rushing performance against the Redskins defense? The Redskins are allowing an average of 117.3 rushing yards and 4.1 yards per carry. But they were much better than that in their overtime loss to Dallas on Sunday, when they held the Cowboys’ DeMarco Murray to 73 yards on 25 carries for a 2.9-yard average. Murray, remember, ran for 139 yards and a 6.3-yard average against the Seahawks three weeks ago. If the Seahawks are successful, it will be their first four-game streak of triple-digit rushing efforts since Weeks 8-11 in 2007.
Number to know: 1,618. That’s how many tackles Redskins LB London Fletcher has since 2000. His total leads the league during that span, which is impressive enough. Making it even more impressive is the players who rank second and third – Ray Lewis (1,395) and Brian Urlacher (1,253). Fletcher leads the Redskins with 123 tackles this season.
Familiar faces: CB Josh Wilson was the Seahawks’ top draft choice in 2007 and started 23 games in three seasons. OT Sean Locklear started 78 games for the Seahawks from 2004-2010. OL Tyler Polumbus (seven games) and DE Kentwan Balmer (11 games) started for the Seahawks last season but were released this year. DE Adam Carriker played at Kennewick High School. FB Mike Sellers played at Walla Walla Community College and North Thurston High School.
