The Seahawks have signed wide receiver Owen Spencer, a rookie from North Carolina State.
Spencer (6-2, 195) had an impressive workout with the team on Wednesday, and the Seahawks had rated him highly in this year’s NFL Draft. But Spencer was not drafted and signed with the Tennessee Titans as a free agent last month. He was released on this week’s roster cut to 80 players.
Spencer ran the 40-yard dash in 4.51 seconds at the NFL scouting combine in April and was timed in 4.52 seconds at his Pro Day workout, but he appeared faster and also looked smooth while running his routes in his workout with the Seahawks. You can watch Spencer’s combine workout here.
And here’s the scouting report on Spencer entering the combine from NFL.com: “Spencer has some redeemable qualities for the next level but lacks the speed and consistency catching the football. Made big plays in college, flashes the ability to make acrobatic catches over his head, away from his frame and in 50/50 situations. However, he suffers from bouts of drops on easier catches. Can get himself open against zone coverage but doesn’t possess the initial explosion to offer much on shorter patterns, doesn’t run crisp enough routes, and lacks the long speed to take the top off a defense in the NFL. Effort shown blocking could lead to special teams value. Spencer’s a Day 3 or free agent prospect.”
To clear a roster spot for Spencer, rookie free agent guard Brent Osborne was released.
