A recap of practice at Seahawks training camp on Thursday:

FOCUS US

Tarvaris Jackson. In his first practice with the team, the former Minnesota Vikings quarterback stepped in with the No. 1 offense.

That’s not surprising, because coach Pete Carroll said last week that Jackson would be the starter because of his familiarity with the system being installed by new coordinator Darrell Bevell, who also came over from the Vikings in the offseason.

The strong-armed Jackson made a good first impression his new teammates.

“I was really impressed,” said tight end Zach Miller, who just signed with the team this week. “Obviously just seeing him play on film and on TV is a lot different than getting to play with the guy. I was really impressed. He had a ton of zip on the ball. He was hitting receivers out here and hitting the tight ends. I was really impressed with how accurate he was.”

Jackson admitted he felt a bit rusty, but was overall pleased with his first outing.

“It’s different guys, but it’s the same offense,” he said. “Everybody else is still kind of learning the offense and I still learning the parts of the offense that were changed and tying to learn the guys.”

UNIT WATCH

Offensive line. Two players practiced for the first time, which made for three new line combinations.

Robert Gallery, the ex-Raider who signed with the team last week, stepped in at left guard on the No. 1 line – which also included left tackle Russell Okung, center Max Unger, right guard John Moffitt and right tackle James Carpenter.

Tyler Polumbus, who started seven games last season, also practiced for the first time after signing his exclusive-right tender. He was left tackle with the No. 2 unit, joining Paul McQuistan, who had been subbing for Gallery; center Mike Gibson and a right side of guard Paul Fanaika at guard and Breno Giacomini at tackle.

The No. 3 unit – from left tackle to right: Will Robinson, Lemuel Jeanpierre, Brent Osborne, Caz Piurowski and Zach Hurd.

ROOKIE WATCH

K.J. Wright. The fourth-round draft choice has stood out – literally – while working as the backup at middle linebacker to David Hawthorne. That’s because Wright is 6 feet 4. It’s a new spot for Wright, who played outside at Mississippi State.

“After looking at him, we really think he’s an inside guy that could do that if we wanted him to,” Carroll said. “But right now we need the depth, we need the competitiveness in there and the competition on the inside. So we’re going to keep him there.”

PLAYS OF THE DAY

Offense: Jackson displaying his strong arm by flicking a laser of a pass to tight end John Carlson along the sideline. Jackson had to step up on the play to avoid the rush, so he didn’t have time to set his feet and deliver the ball with a full motion. But it was difficult to tell by the velocity and accuracy of the throw.

Defense: Linebacker Aaron Curry tipping a pass that Jackson threw a tad behind Carlson and was intercepted by strong safety Kam Chancellor.

Special teams: Pick a kick by Jeff Reed. The just-signed kicker did not miss in his first practice with the team.

OUT OF ACTION

Wide receiver Ben Obomanu was excused from practice because of a family matter.

Defensive end Red Bryant was given the afternoon off to rest his surgically repaired knee, while cornerback Walter Thurmond and defensive end Dexter Davis sat out because of minor injuries. Still sidelined while recovering from surgeries: wide receiver Deon Butler (leg), tight end Cameron Morrah (toe), defensive tackle Colin Cole (ankle) and cornerback Roy Lewis (knee).

UP NEXT

The players will practice at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, and the session is open to the public. After a morning practice on Saturday, the players will be off Sunday.

YOU DON’T SAY

“It’s a combination of what I believe the coaches are doing here, the atmosphere and what I think we’re going to do here in the future. I think we’re going to win and win a lot and be a championship team.” – Miller, when asked what attracted him to the Seahawks
