Virginia Mason Athletic Center becomes Football U on Saturday, when 125 youth coaches will participate in a day-long coaching school sponsored by the Seahawks and USA Football.
The event, which runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Seahawks’ headquarters, will feature coaching safety and theory sessions; defensive and offensive fundamentals and drills sessions; and chalk-talk sessions.
“It will be a full day of teaching youth coaches how to teach kids the right fundamentals to play the game,” said Paul Johns, a former receiver/punt returner for the Seahawks and now assistant director of community outreach.
The coaching safety and theory session in the morning will include a concussion-awareness discussion by Dr. Scott Laker and an equipment-fitting display. Among the five stations in the defensive fundamentals session will be one on tackling headed by Mark Stewart, who coaches at Meadowdale High School.
Seahawks defensive coordinator Gus Bradley will be the keynote speaker during the lunch break, which will be followed by a chalk-talk session and the offensive fundamentals and drills clinic featuring coaches from five in-state high schools – Seattle Prep’s Noah Roehl (quarterbacks), Mercer Island’s Bill Marsh (wide receivers), Prairie’s Terry Hyde, Snohomish’s Ed Lucero (line) and Auburn’s Walt Hunt (running backs).
The event, which is being held at VMAC for the first time, is sold out.
