DeMaurice Smith was named the Players Represenative succeeding Gene Upshaw who passed away in August. Smith beat out two former NFL Players Troy Vincent and Trace Armstrong with a vote of 20-6-6. when it was announced the reps of the team all applauded him and gave him a standing ovation.
He will have a rough road ahead of him as he will start neogations with the Union and try and save a possible lockout in 2011. He had two years to do that and will start working with Roger Goodell as soon as possible.

So Why Smith over two players? Well it's simple it might be easier as a player to try and get what you want from him. Vincent and Armstong might not have been as easy to persuade as a player for certian things like suspensions or fines. Because in reality they (Vincent and Armstrong) knew what it took and had to be done to be a player. Armstrong and Vincent might not allow a guy like Pac Man in the NFL, whereas Smith might be more likely in keeping him. Ultimetely the players have decided the guy they feel is most likely to lead us and keep us out of a lock-out in 2011. Hopefully they have picked a Super Bowl MVP and not a first-round bust.

Reaction from around the league:
In a statement, the NFL said: "We congratulate DeMaurice Smith and look forward to working with him and the NFLPA board to ensure the continued health and growth of our game."

"Mr. Smith is our best option of leading us into the future, and we're proud to be a part of it."- Rams represenative Adam Goldberg.

"legacy decision for the organization to move forward."- Player represenative Kevin Mawae.

Said Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck about Smith's election: “You want to be unified when you’re on the field and I think it’s no different when it comes to union issues.”
