Tentative Deal Reached on New Sports Arena in Seattle

Reports: Tentative deal reached on new sports arena in Seattle

Reports say the Seattle City Council and investor Chris Hansen have reached a tentative agreement to build an arena in Seattle's SoDo neighborhood.

The deal is expected to be announced on Tuesday. The revised deal must then be voted on and sent to the full council. The Seattle Times reports city sources say there are enough council members to pass the deal later in September.

"This is great news and it puts Chris Hansen in a good position to get an NBA team," Mayor Mike McGinn told KING-5 Monday night.

The Times reports that the revised deal includes changes to satisfy both the Port of Seattle and manufacturers in South Seattle who objected to traffic that could clog streets and potentially jeopardize jobs.

Hansen proposed the plan in a Memorandum of Understanding in February and since then, McGinn and King County Council Executive Dow Constantine have publicly announced their support.

The King County Council made some amendments to the agreement before approving the deal in July.

Reagan Dunn, Larry Phillips and Pete von Reichbauer voted against the MOU, saying they want assurances, particularly about Port jobs and traffic.

"This is very quick, very fast-track, and we need more answers," Dunn said.

Hansen had proposed building the nearly $490 million arena south of Safeco and CenturyLink fields in Seattle. The amount of public support would be $200 million if an NBA and NHL franchise moved to Seattle.
