Good morning. Here’s what’s “out there” about the Seahawks, from today and over the weekend:
Dan Pompei of National Football Post lists Tom Cable among his “impact assistants,” and has this to say about the Seahawks’ first-year assistant head coach/offensive line coach: “You can’t underestimate the value of a solid offensive line coach who gets his players to use proper technique, brings the best out of individuals and then gets them to work in unison. Cable could have the same kind of effect on the Seahawks that Mike Tice had on the Bears last year.”

Peter King’s “Monday Morning Quarterback” on SI.com is a must read to start any week. He hasn’t got much on the Seahawks this week, other than a quick endorsement of a QB Matt Leinhart/coach Pete Carroll reunion in Seattle: “For one reason: Why not?
But Michael Lombardi of NFL.com just says “no” to the same idea of the former Heisman Trophy winner from USC playing again for his college coach. Offers Lombardi: “It might happen, but I am fairly confident it won’t work because Leinart is not up to the task.”
Eric Williams of the New Tribune caught up with defensive tackle Brandon Mebane, one of the couple dozen Seahawks who are scheduled to become free agents – whenever free agency begins in this offseason of uncertainty for the NFL.
It’s not very often that Carroll appears at a function and isn’t the main attraction. But then it’s not every day that the Seahawks coach shares the stage with South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu. That happened Friday night at the Tacoma Dome, and Steve Maynard of the New Tribune has the details.
Most of the Seahawks are working out on their own or with former college teammates who also are in the NFL during the work stoppage, and many of them are not in the area. Free safety Earl Thomas, a first-round draft choice last year, is back home in Texas. Cedric Golden of the Austin American-Statesman talked to Thomas at the state track and field meet. Asked when the players might get back to work, Thomas said, ““I’m a fan just like everybody else. I’ll look for it on ESPN just like everyone else. We’ll all find out at the same time.”
The two sides in the labor dispute return to mediation today, but Mike Freeman of CBSSports.com doesn’t think that is the avenue needed to get an agreement. During his conference call with Seahawks season ticket holders on Friday, commissioner Roger Goodell agreed. He says what’s needed is negotiation, not litigation – or mediation.
