Josh Portis did not receive a lot of aclaim coming out of Division II California University of Pennsylvania. Though quite a few in football knew about him.

He did set school records with 3,421 passing yards, 36 touchdowns and 3,870 total offensive yards over two season at CU.

The cousin of NFL running back Clinton Portis, began at the University of Florida, then Maryland and then finished his collegiate career UCP and went undrafted.

He was signed by the 'Hawks as an undrafted free-agent rookie in July.

According to a source, Portis will be receiving about half the reps for this Thursday's game against San Diego. That mean's about a quarter for Tarvaris Jackson or less and about a quarter for Charlie Whitehurst.

According to those present Seahawks practice Portis has showed a nice touch and has been a pleasant surprise. Pete Carroll want to test him in a game situation to see how he does.

Not now, but at some point he could be competing with Whitehurst for the team's back QB position. Which if that happens means Whitehurst two weeks ago had a chance to be the team's starter and could be relegated to the third-string.

“I’m really excited about Josh,” Carroll said. “We’re really excited about him being our third quarterback at this time. He was an extremely big get for us in free agency.”

“Josh is a guy that I’ve known for so long, since he was a kid. And now to see him after all the travels he’s been through, whether it was high school or college – I think he’s gone to seven or eight schools – and he never really settled in until his last stop at California (Pa.)," Carroll added, according to the Tacoma News Tribune.

“And when he comes to us, you have no idea what he’s going to be like. But he’s in command of the offense as much as he could be at this time. He’s handling the huddle really well. He’s very confident, and he’s really a talented kid. He’s got great feet. He’s got great delivery and a very strong arm. And he’s very poised about it. He’s just been a real pleasant surprise.”

“He’s been a pleasant surprise,” quarterbacks coach Carl Smith added according to the team's website.
