Re: Seahawks Free Agent Daily Reports

Here are some players that have had private workouts scheduled with us or have one scheduled in the future according to Profootballtalk. Along with the list is a breakdown I did with the help of Lindsey's Draft Guide. I will finish the rest over this week.

Re: Seahawks Free Agent Daily Reports

I am in the process of writing an article on the draft and that's going to kick-off this week. I will be writing an article a day preparing for the draft. Unsure of what tomorrow's will be or Thursday or Fridays, but Saturday I'm figuring to go with something along the lines of a first draft since 1998 without a man by the name of Mike Holmgren.

Re: Seahawks Free Agent Daily Reports

Win now- a motto the Seattle Seahawks are going by.
With the NFL Draft coming up Saturday and Sunday why would they think to change that motto. With the fourth overall selection of the draft thanks to a 4-12 record the Seahawks are drafting from a class that isn’t anything spectacular.
Of course Seattle couldn’t have had this pick in 2007 when Adrian Peterson went No. 7 to the Vikings or even 2008 when Jonathan Stewart was selected by the Panthers.
A running game has been pretty much extinct since the 2005-06 season in which Shaun Alexander broke the NFL-Single season scoring record and went onto win his first and only NFL rushing title. Did that have to do with the loss of left guard Steve Hutchinson more than anything? Who wouldn’t believe it? Since he left Seattle has yet to find a 1,000 yard rusher. So could Seattle go offensive line with the selection?
With Seattle owning a top-5 selection they should be able to get an immediate impact player, or so we figure. Seattle’s history of first-round selections under Tim Ruskell have been far from that. Former first-rounder’s like Chris Spencer who has been injured and could be fighting for his job with former seventh-rounder Steve Vallos. Or Kelly Jennings whose fallen down the depth chart so much his name comes up in roster cuts. Lawrence Jackson has only had one-season to do anything and still is a work in progress, but instead the Seahawks seem to strike gold in the second round. Lofa Tatupu a three-time Pro Bowler, Josh Wilson whose taken a spot over Jennings on the depth chart and John Carlson a man who set a few rookie receiving records that had previously been held by a guy that is named Steve Largent. Yeah I guess you could say two-of-three of those picks were so-so (kidding).
So who does Seattle take with the fourth selection come Saturday? Aaron Curry is the defensive guy of this year’s class, but will he last to four? Most mock drafts have him going third to Kansas City and there’s still a remote chance the Lions select him first despite acquiring Julian Peterson from Seattle in March.
Then you have to ask if Curry slides past both the Lions and Chiefs would Seattle take him? With Leroy Hill and Lofa Tatupu they find themselves in the same boat that made them trade Peterson whose gone to a few Pro Bowls with Lofa in Seattle- having too much money being spent on one position.
The cost of a top-10 pick and lack of talent for this years class also has no suitors lined up for a trade with Seattle or any of the other teams in the top-10 class. With that Seattle is playing make a deal. In which they are trying to make it seem like they are somewhat interested in Mark Sanchez. Denver is interested in Sanchez after trading Jay Cutler and they might spark a trade with St. Louis. Washington is also interested in upgrading from Jason Campbell to Sanchez and they might trade with Kansas City opening up a good chance Curry falls to Seattle If he does Seattle has to take him.
With Leroy Hill franchised and talks appear to be not making any ground Seattle has the chance of taking Curry and if Hill does leave after this season joining Lofa. If Hill does sign then you have three linebackers that are all under five-years of playing experience. The thing that made the Ravens core so dominant was its young core of linebackers mixed in with Ray Lewis. Seattle could try and build that around Lofa- not saying he’s a Ray Lewis. Hill’s success has drawn him into one of the most underrated linebackers in the NFL, but could that have been credited with the players that surrounded him? Let’s face it offensive opponents weren’t mainly preparing for Leroy Hill, but they sure were mainly focusing on Julian Peterson and Tatupu. If Curry was selected teams might focus on Hill and Tatupu allowing Curry to play his game and turn into a Leroy Hill underrated version.
If Curry doesn’t fall well then the option of still selecting Michael Crabtree could be there also. Despite signing TJ Houshmandzadeh during free-agency they could use a young receiver like Crabtree. With Nate Burleson coming off his torn ACL his speed may not be what it once was and Deion Branch hasn’t played a full healthy season with Seattle since we traded a first-round pick for him to New England- nor has he had a 1,000 yard receiving season in his career. However Crabtree is coming off of a fractured foot, but he is a playmaker just ask the University of Texas. Seattle has never had a true playmaker for Hasselbeck, but isn’t that why they signed Housh?
Seattle could use the Miami Dolphins is an example with its pick this season. Last year Miami had the top overall selection and went with an offensive lineman Jake Long- who would go on to make his first career Pro Bowl for the Dolphins. Seattle could draft between two lineman that have a future ahead of them Eugene Monroe or Jason Smith. That would also allow them to train either one of them into the future replacement of Walter Jones, but they did sign Sean Locklear to an extension and are high on him as Jones’s replacement.
It appears the safest bet for Seahawks is when a possible suitor comes along like the Redskins pull the trigger on a trade. Don’t pay someone a top-4 pick when it appears there are so many questions to the class. Seattle has Hasselbeck they don’t need a quarterback to start anytime too soon. They have reliable core of receivers and a reliable group of linebackers with Lance Laury, Will Herring and David Hawthorne. The running back class isn’t a top-5 pick class this year. So trade to middle of the pack and select a running back there.
If you must make a pick make a pick to win now- Miami went from 1-15 to 11-5 and an AFC East Division Champion.
It’s the safest pick with a lineman a win now mentality.

Re: Seahawks Free Agent Daily Reports

First impressions in the NFL are tough to forget.
Just ask Joey Galloway about how his hold-out cost him his time in Seattle, but opened the door to kick-off the Seahawks run for a 2005 NFC West Championship team. Galloway felt he was a top wide receiver in the league and wanted the money to support it, but Mike Holmgren who had just been given full responsibilities with the Seahawks begged to differ.
Galloway would hold-out the first 10 games on the 1999 season for the Seahawks before returning for the final six and its loss to the Dolphins in the Wild Card round. Holmgren listened to trade offers heading up to the 2000 draft and the Cowboys offered two first round draft picks (2000 and 2001 picks).
In 2000 despite the Seahawks having Ricky Watters they decided to take Shaun Alexander out of Alabama with the 19th overall selection of the draft. Little did Holmgren know his pick of Alexander and the 2001 pick would be the building blocks to the Seahawks success in the mid-2000’s.
Alexander would go onto play in all 16 games and even start one as he rushed for 313 yards and scored twice for the Seahawks. That proved to be enough for the Seahawks to feel content with its running game, but their selection in 2001 would be one that would pave a gold road to Detroit.
With the 17th selection of 2001 draft stemming from the trade between Dallas and Seattle that sent them Joey Galloway who just so happened to tear his ACL on opening day for the Green Bay Packers in which a Dallas Cowboy pick was used in the trade appeared too early to tell who would be the winners of the deal, but Seattle was picking up some ground. They decided to draft a man to along with a young and rising Walter Jones- Steve Hutchinson out of Michigan University.
Prior to the trade Jones had made the Pro Bowl just once in his career 1999, but after the addition of Hutchinson he would go every year Hutchinson was his teammate. Hutchinson turned into a decent enough guard to earn $49 million from the Vikings after clearing holes for a man picked the year before him- Shaun Alexander.
Hutchins and Jones each were at least two All-Pro’s together and Alexander went on to win the MVP award in 2005. Galloway went on to play for the Cowboys for four years before moving on to Tampa Bay. During his time with the Cowboys they never won a playoff game and the Seahawks were on the rise as an elite powerhouse NFC team.
Now Hutchinson clears holes for a man named Adrian Peterson and since leaving Seattle the Seahawks running game appears to have gone with him. Alexander was let go prior to the 2008 season and hasn’t rushed for 1,000 yards in a season since 2005. He signed with Washington for a short time in the middle of the season to reunite with former running back coach Stump Mitchell who is the Redskins assistant head coach also and Jim Zorn (coached Seahawks QB’s when Alexander played in Seattle). He was let go by the Redskins after they traveled to Seattle and has yet to find a team willing to risk on a 31-year old running back that hasn’t rushed for 1,000 yards or more since 2005 or hasn’t played a complete healthy season since 2005.
Just imagine if the trade between Dallas and Seattle never came through or if first impressions weren’t that big of a deal.

Re: Seahawks Free Agent Daily Reports

Here are the two drafts Atlanta had under Mora. By the looks of everything they had some decent picks later on in the rounds.
After thier picks I also included two players that were still on the draft board at that position. I think it will say a lot about the ability of knowing who he was picking. It shows he decided over a guy whose still in the NFL compared to a guy whose not.

Atlanta Falcons Drafts Under Mora:
2004
1- 8 DeAngelo Hall- DB: Hall was selected over Dunta Robinson and Reggie Williams. Made two Pro Bowls as a Falcon before going to Oakland. A majority of his success came under Mora as head coach who is also a secondary specialist.
Defensive Backs still on the board: Dunta Robinson (Houston) and Ahmad Carroll (Green Bay)
1- 29 Michael Jenkins- WR: Mora and crew decided Jenkins over Rashaun Woods (went to San Francisco two picks later) and Devery Henderson (taken in the 2nd round by New Orleans). Jenkins is still a Falcon and has 17 career touchdowns, 2,372 receiving yards coming from 185 receptions.
Wide Receivers still on the board: Rashaun Woods (San Francisco) and Devery Henderson (New Orleans)
3- 90 Matt Schaub- QB: Schaub filled in nicely enough for Vick that led the Texans to trade for him. He has thrown over 2,000 yards in both of his seasons with the Texans and has a 30-25 touchdown-interception numbers career wise.
Quarterback still on the board: Luke McCown (Cleveland) and Craig Krenzel (Chicago).
4- 101 Demorrio Williams- LB: Williams has had his presence felt in the NFL with the Falcons. His second season he was second on the team in tackles with 127. Williams success earned him a five-year deal with the Chiefs.
Linebackers still on the board: Kendyll Pope (Indianapolis) and Leon Joe (Chicago).
5- 142 Chad Lavalais- DT: Lavalais played just two seasons in the NFL with the Falcons, but during that time picked up 2.5 sacks and a total of 53 tackles as he started 20 games and played in 30. He also deflected two passes. His spear on McNabb in 2005 ended his season with a sports hernia. In 2007 he was let go by Carolina after signing with them after sitting out 2006.
Defensive Tackles still on board: Amon Gordon (Cleveland) and Corey Williams (Green Bay)
6- 186 Etric Pruitt- DB: Pruitt a familiar face in Seattle was a member of the 2005 Super Bowl team in Detroit. He has nine career tackles (seven from Seattle) and a pass deflection with the Seahawks. Since 2006 he has been trying to get back in the NFL. In 2006 he signed with Detroit, but never played a game for them.
Safeties still on the board: Keith Lewis (San Francisco).
7- 219 Quincy Wilson- RB: Spent 2004 with the Falcons on its practice squad. Since then he’s spent his time on the Bengals practice squad.
Running Backs still on the board: Derrick Ward (New York Jets) and Bruce Perry (Philadelphia).

2005
1- 27 Roddy White- WR: White was selected to his first Pro Bowl in 2008 in which he set its single season record in receiving yards with 1,382. He has had two consecutive seasons in which he eclipsed the 1,000 yard make and has 16 career touchdowns. Prior to 2007 he was behind Joe Horn on the depth chart, but things changed as he evolved into the Falcons top guy despite not having an elite quarterback until they took Matt Ryan in 2008.
Wide Receivers still on the board: Mark Bradley (Chicago) and Roscoe Parrish (Buffalo)
2- 59 Jonathan Babineaux- DE: Jonathan the older brother or Seahawks Jordan has had success with the Falcons as an end and tackle. He has eight career sacks and 142 tackles, while his best season came in 2007 in which he had 44 tackles and three sacks. He also had an interception and a fumble recovery to add to his career totals.
Defensive Ends still on the board: Justin Tuck (New York Giants) and Vincent Burns (Indianapolis)
3- 90 Jordan Beck- LB: Beck was let go by the Falcons after the 2006 season and has been out of football since 2007. With the Falcons he had 12 tackles.
Linebackers still on the board: Darryl Blackstock (Arizona) and Leroy Hill (Seattle).
4-128 Chauncey Davis- DE: Davis is still with Atlanta and has 132 career tackles. In 2006 he started 13 games had 36 tackles and an interception along with a sack. He has eight career sacks including four in 2008.
Defensive Ends still on the board: Chris Canty (Dallas) and David McMillan.
5- 160 Michael Boley- LB: Boley left Atlanta in 2008 when he became a free agent and signed with New York. Since being drafted he hasn’t missed a game and has 330 career tackles along with six sacks. He has five career interceptions.
Linebackers still on the board: Rian Wallace (Pittsburgh) and Lance Mitchell (Arizona)
5- 164 Frank Omiyale- OT: Omiyale played in one game with the Falcons before signing with the Panthers. He signed with the Bears during free-agency this season and might be a starter for them. He earned his first career start with the Panthers to fill in for Jordan Gross when he was hurt.
Tackles still on the board: Wesley Britt (San Diego) and Scott Young (Philadelphia).
6-201 DeAndra Cobb- RB: Cobb is out of the NFL.
Running Backs still on the board: Lionel Gates (Buffalo) and Anthony Davis (Indianapolis)
7- 241 Darrell Shropshire- DT: Shropshire is out of the NFL, but currently playing with the Arizona Rattlers in the AFL.
Defensive Tackles still on the board: Keyonta Marshall Philadelphia.

Re: Seahawks Free Agent Daily Reports

This is the pick that could decide the Seahawks pick. If Curry goes to Kansas City then it appears we may go Crabtree or even try and trade. If Tyson Jackson is taken by the CHiefs it appears we will most likely take Crurry.
