The Seahawks are looking into playing a game in throwback uniforms during the 2012 season and also putting a grass playing surface at Qwest Field, president Peter McLoughlin said today.
McLoughlin made his comments during a radio interview with Dave “Softy” Mahler on KJR-AM.
The NFL’s uniform contract switches from Reebok to Nike for the 2012 season, and the Seahawks already have had discussions with the Oregon-based Nike company about new looks – including an old one, as the Seahawks never have played a game in replicas of their vintage uniforms.
“There’s a lot of creative stuff in the works,” McLoughlin said.
As for the turf at Qwest Field, McLoughlin offered, “We’re doing a lot of evaluation on the turf. … In a perfect world, both the Seahawks and Sounders would like to have grass; would like to play on grass.”
But replacing the FieldTurf and installing grass would be an eight-month process, meaning either the Seahawks or Sounders would have to play elsewhere for a season. Adding to the situation is the fact that the University of Washington will play its football games at Qwest in 2012 while Husky Stadium is being renovated.
“Moving to grass presents some real challenges as far as scheduling,” said McLoughlin, adding that is also would be an “expensive and long process.”
