Yes, the 49ers have won five Super Bowls. But their victory over the Saints on Saturday was the first playoff win for the Bay Area Boys since 2002 – when they beat the Giants 39-38 at Candlestick Park (then called 3Com Park).
The Giants and 49ers will meet again on Sunday, this time in the NFC Championship game.
But the 49ers have an even longer drought going. The last time one of their players was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated was Oct. 26, 1998. The cover boy? Kevin Gogan, the offensive lineman from the University of Washington who also played in the NFL for the Cowboys (1987-93), Raiders (1994-96), Dolphins (1999) and Chargers (2000) in addition to spending two seasons with the 49ers (1997-98).
Gogan appeared on the cover ready to bite someone’s leg, under the heading “NFL’s dirtiest players.” Under the picture was this: “The nastiest of the nasty: 49ers guard Kevin Gogan.” You can check out that cover here.
This week, SI features the 49ers’ foursome of center Jonathan Goodwin, quarterback Alex Smith, fullback Bruce Miller and running back Frank Gore on a regional cover (pictured). It is the 34th cover appearance for the 49ers.
