Good morning. Here’s what’s “out there” about the Seahawks for today, Aug.11:
Danny O’Neil of the Seattle Times takes a look at the first step in what is Tarvaris Jackson’s second chance – tonight’s preseason opener against the Chargers, when the just-signed QB will start and is expected to play briefly. Says O’Neil: “An opportunity. That’s something Tarvaris Jackson never truly got the past two years in Minnesota, and it’s the single biggest reason he’s here in Seattle. ‘A chance to have a chance,’ Jackson said. Jackson is first in line to fill the starting job Matt Hasselbeck held the past 10 years, and in San Diego on Thursday, the Seahawks will get their first look at Jackson’s second chance in an exhibition game against the Chargers.”
Speaking of Hasselbeck, Jerry Brewer of the Times traveled to Nashville to check-in with the QB who signed with the Titans in free agency. Says Brewer: “Hasselbeck is also dealing with his fourth offensive coordinator in four years. In Seattle, he spent his glory years with the demanding Mike Holmgren. Holmgren left after the 2008 season, and Hasselbeck dealt with coordinators Greg Knapp and Jeremy Bates the past two years. The transition was easy because they ran variations of the West Coast offense. Titans’ offensive coordinator Chris Palmer doesn’t. ‘This has been, like, a wholesale change,’ said Hasselbeck, who signed a three-year, $20 million contract with the Titans last week that should pay him $9 million this season. ‘The change from Holmgren to Knapp was like moving from Boston to South Carolina. And then to Bates was like moving to Southern California. But now all of a sudden, I’m in France.’ ”
At the News Tribune, Dave Boling also offers his take on Jackson’s fresh start and checks in with former NFL player Reggie Barlow. Offers Boling: “While he was off in the NFL, Barlow began hearing from old friends in Montgomery about a junior high kid named Tarvaris Jackson. ‘He is the absolute truth,’ he was told. Barlow said Ridgecrest was a neighborhood with challenges, but Jackson developed the straight and strong character of his mother, Sanque, who worked at a Montgomery car factory. ‘She’s a very, very strong person, and his personality is definitely from her,’ Barlow said. ‘She’s athletic, too; he got that competitive mentality from her.’ “
Also at the News Tribune, Eric Williams previews tonight’s game. Says Williams: “So the contest will be treated more as a matter of survival by Carroll rather than a chance to meet any lofty expectations. Key players are likely to see limited action, or not even take the field. ‘We’re thinking this is very important to us in terms of the process here because our guys haven’t played very much football yet,’ Carroll said. ‘And they won’t get a lot in this game, but that game speed is something that we need. These games are really crucial.’ ”

At the Union Tribune down here in San Diego, Kevin Acee looks at the game from the Chargers’ perspective. Offers Acee: “Many players whose jersey replicas will be in the stands won’t be on the field Thursday night. You’ll have to look to the sideline to see tight end Antonio Gates or linebacker Larry English (rehabilitating foot injuries), left tackle Marcus McNeill (knee surgery that will sideline him two weeks) or cornerback Antoine Cason (recovering from finger surgery). You might get an on-field glimpse of Malcolm Floyd, see Ryan Mathews carry the ball a few times, see Vincent Jackson catch a ball or two. Philip Rivers and the offensive line will probably be in the game for a quarter. Same for most starters. Some of the big names might play only one series. In all, more than a dozen players won’t participate due to mostly minor injuries.”
