One of the reasons Lofa Tatupu and Matt Hasselbeck are no longer Seahawks is because the team needed cap space to secure younger future stars.

The Seahawks big get this offseason was tight end Zach Miller at the cost of $34 million over five years.

Miller though, as pointed out by the Seattle Times and other media outlets this week, has just 11 receptions for the entire season. He's been thrown to an average of 2.5 times per game.

Ideally 11 receptions would be about how many receptions he totals in two or three games. Miller has been under-utilized. He has been pinned to the line trying to save Tarvaris Jackson's life rather than catch passes from him.

Apparently he's a victim of his own skill-set.

Miller expected as much coming into the season.

He said this week “No matter how good your tackles are, sometimes you’ve still got to help them out. And especially with a young offensive line, I expected to be in protection more.”

Says offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell "Zach's our ace in the hole as a blocker in terms of protection, in terms of the run game. He can do some good things in the pass game because we usually end up sending the other guys out and leaving him into block because he's so good at it. That's definitely something we need to look at and balance."

This isn't the first time Bevell has been pressed about lack of action for Miller. The subject was also broached at least one other time back in September.

Even Ravens coach John Harbaugh thinks Miller can produce a ton offensively.

"Zach Miller, in Oakland, we couldn't really stop him when we played them."

11 receptions shows not only the dire situation on the offensive line but that the Seahawks might be becoming predictable.

Here's how the passing game has been distributed this season:

Sidney Rice 27 receptions 48 targets 435 yards 1 TD
Doug Baldwin 28 receptions 45 targets 434 yards 2 TDs
Ben Obomanu 23 receptions 36 targets 248 yards 2 TDs
Mike Williams 12 receptoins 21 targets 130 yards 1 TD
Zach Miller 11 receptions 20 targets 99 yards 0 TDs
Golden Tate 11 receptions 19 targets 19 yards 1TD
Anthony McCoy 9 receptions 18 targets 95 yards 0 TDs
Marshawn Lynch 12 receptions 19 targets 91 yards 0 TDs
Justin Forsett 13 receptions 21 targets 86 yards 0 TDs
Leon Washington 8 receptions 12 targets 36 yards 0 TDs
Kris Durham 3 receptions 4 targets 30 yards 0 TDs
Michael Robinson 2 receptions 4 targets 18 yards 0 TDs
Eddie Williams 1 reception 1 target 17 yards 0 TDs

-Wide receiver Deon Butler has been moved to the active roster from the physically unable to perform list. Butler has not played since last December after he fractured his leg in two places in a game against the 49ers. Rookie WR Kris Durham was placed on injured reserve.

"We know he’s a tremendous speed player and guy that has come through and made a lot of things happen for us last season, so we’re anxious to fit him back in,” Pete Carroll said of Butler.

-ProFootballFocus.com a very respected website for analysis of NFL football, often complicated and mathematical, rates Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor as a first team Mid-season All-Pro player along with Chargers safety Eric Weddle.

"Even after having the worst game of his career Chancellor is still our top ranked safety. He makes plays all over the field. Weddle was erroneously ranked as a worse free agent than Danieal Manning, Michael Huff and Quintin Mikell by myself. Even I get it wrong sometimes, but between the four analysts we got it right this time with his All Pro nod.

-The Seahawks defense slipped a little against Dallas, especially against the run. DeMarco Murray ran for 139 yards on 22 carries or 6.3 yards per carry.

Defensive coordinator Gus Bradley said this week, via CBSSports, "The big thing that we saw is that we had some missed assignments. For our players to see that--it’s every play, you’ve really got to be on your assignments. Tightening those things up will really help."

-Red Bryant has been named the Seahawks team winner for the NFL's Ed Block courage award. Bryant returned this season after suffering a season-ending MCL injury last year. The award goes to the player who exemplifies commitment to the principles of sportsmanship and courage. He'll now be a candidate for the NFL's league Ed Block courage award.
Bryant has been noted as the team's vocal leader this season.

-Do you consider Pete Carroll a player's coach?

The Sporting News surveyed 111 NFL players and asked them to name a coach they would not want to play for, not including their own coach. Those who play under the ever encouraging Carroll might disagree. There have got to be quite a few more coaches harder to play for than Carroll.
