Is Pete Carroll jumping the gun?

Saturday morning he announced that Tarvaris Jackson will be the team's starter on Sept. 11 in San Francisco against the 49ers to open the season.

Carroll's explanation:

“This entire program has always been about competition. But in this situation, I think to make it the most competitive for our team, Tarvaris needs to be our starter right now.”

Translation: Carroll wants to build confidence in T-Jax by making him "The Guy" for perhaps the first time in his career. In Minny, Jackson always looked over his shoulder and obviously was shelved for the failed Brett Favre experiment.

And there is some merit to the fact that there is a new offensive coordinator and a shortened training camp. If Charlie Whitehurst didn't have a chance in Carroll's mind, then why wait to make the decision and possibly hinder the preparation of Jackson's work with the first-team.

-Meanwhile, Lofa Tatupu is being asked to restructure his contract according to MAC's football blog.

Tatupu currently has a contract worth $25 million over 5 years. It's possible that if Tatupu doesn't restructure his deal he could be released.
